The colour band indicates the grit (coarseness) of the drill bit. Blue is medium grit for general-purpose work like gel removal and surface prep. Red is fine grit for finishing and sensitive areas. Green is coarse for fast material removal. Yellow is extra-fine for polishing. Violet/purple is super-coarse for heavy-duty work. Black is extra-coarse for maximum material removal.

Carbide drill bits use tungsten carbide cutting flutes that slice through material, making them ideal for removing gel polish, acrylic, and hard coatings quickly with less heat. Diamond drill bits use diamond grit coating that grinds material away, making them better for cuticle work, detailed shaping, and working on natural nails. Both are sterilisable and reusable.

After each client, brush debris from the flutes under running water using a brass cleaning brush. Soak in your approved disinfectant for the required contact time. Sterilise using autoclave (up to 134 degrees C), dry-heat oven, or chemical sterilisation. Carbide and diamond bits are compatible with all standard sterilisation methods. Dry thoroughly before storage.

For manicure work, 15,000-20,000 RPM is typical for gel and acrylic removal. For pedicure and callus work, 10,000-15,000 RPM provides good control. For cuticle work and natural nail finishing, keep below 15,000 RPM. Always start at a lower speed and increase gradually. Coarser bits generally require lower speeds than finer bits.

Corn (barrel) shapes are versatile for surface removal and nail shortening. Flame shapes are ideal for cuticle area cleanup and under-nail work. Ball shapes work well for sidewall cleanup and detailed cuticle work. Cone shapes are great for backfill and surface filing. Cylinder shapes provide flat, even surface preparation. Choose based on the area you are working on and the precision required.
